    Why Use Gypsum in Agriculture?

    In agriculture, gypsum (calcium sulfate) serves as a vital soil amendment and fertilizer. It improves soil structure by softening dense clay, mitigates aluminum toxicity, reclaims sodic soils, and supplies plants with essential calcium and sulfur without altering the soil’s pH.


    HELPS THE SOIL

    Loosening Clay Soils: The calcium in gypsum flocculates (clumps together) clay particles, which helps break up compacted soil and improves root penetration.

    Increasing Infiltration: Improved soil aggregation allows water and air to move more efficiently through the soil profile.

    Reducing Surface Crusting: Gypsum prevents the soil surface from sealing over after heavy rains, which promotes better seedling emergence.

    Erosion Control: By encouraging water infiltration, gypsum minimizes runoff and keeps valuable topsoil in place.

    Reclaiming Sodic Soils: Gypsum is highly effective at treating high-sodium soils. The calcium replaces excess sodium, allowing the harmful sodium to be washed downward below the root zone.

    Alleviating Aluminum Toxicity: In highly acidic, weathered subsoils, soluble aluminum can restrict deep root growth. Gypsum helps neutralize this aluminum, allowing roots to grow deeper and survive droughts better.

    Preventing Phosphorus Runoff: The calcium in gypsum reacts with soluble phosphorus in the soil, holding it in place. This stops agricultural phosphorus from leaching into local waterways and causing algae blooms.
